Non-Woven Abrasive Drums

What are Abrasive Drums?

Abrasive sanding drums are a newer type of abrasive created to work with power tools like surface conditioning tools and linear grinders.  They are 4 inches long cylinders that come in several variations such as non-woven abrasives, coated abrasives, wire wheel drums, and polishing drums.

These finishing drums are great for jobs that require a worker to grind/sand a large area like an autobody technician who needs to sand and prep a car for painting.

What are Non-Woven Abrasives?

Non-woven sanding abrasives are unlike the more commonly used bonded abrasives, like grinding wheels, and coated abrasives, like traditional sanding belts. Rather than having a solid surface area, they are made up of an “open weave” web of nylon fibers coated in abrasive material. These nylon fibers are bonded together with synthetic resins, not woven, hence the name “non-woven.”

They are often used after grinding products are used.  Non-woven abrasives are more pliable and three dimensional making them a less aggressive option.  This helps for tasks such as deburring, cleaning, rust and paint removal, and finishing surfaces without gouging the metal or wood base material.

What can Non-Woven Abrasive Drums be Used for?

There are many uses for the three different types of non-woven finishing drums.  Most customers find them extremely useful for paint and rust removal from metal surfaces, but they are also capable of:

  • Body filler remover

  • Bondo removal

  • Descaling

  • Creating brushed satin-finished surfaces

  • Glue, Sealant and other Adhesive Removal

  • Scale and Oxidation Removal

  • Surface prep before Buffing

Types of Non-Woven Drums

Paint Stripping Drum

Our Black Hawk Abrasives Easy Strip and Clean Abrasive Drum is an incredibly useful tool for cleaning and prepping a surface without damaging the material you want to keep.  Similar in design to our paint removal discs for angle grinders, our clean and strip drums are made entirely of nylon webbing infused with silicon carbide abrasives.  These drums are capable of removing paint, rust, Bondo, and body filler from a car faster than most other tools and often found to be favorable to abrasive blasting.

Compatible with: Contour surface conditioning tools, burnishing tools, handheld drum sanders, and other linear grinders and surface finishing machines with a 3/4" quad key shaft.

Surface Conditioning Drum

Available in multiple grits from 60 to 320, the surface conditioning drums are great for the final step in prepping a surface before buffing and polishing.  This drum is less aggressive than an easy strip and clean drum but is still able to remove light paint and rust in addition to conditioning metal surfaces.

Compatible with: Contour surface conditioning tools, burnishing tools, handheld drum sanders, and other linear grinders and surface finishing machines with a 3/4" quad key shaft.

Surface Conditioning Flap Wheel Drums

The interleaf flap wheel drum is a combination of a flap wheel drum and a surface conditioning drum.  They are made up of evenly spaced abrasive flaps that are separated by sections of non-woven nylon mesh, similar to the one that makes up the surface conditioning drums.

Interleaf flap wheel drums allow you to considerably cut down on work time by doing two jobs at once.  The abrasive sanding flaps can do the more aggressive work like removal of paint, rust, grind marks, and stock while the non-woven sections take care of conditioning your metal at the same time.  This saves a step of prep work before painting, welding, or polishing a surface.

Compatible with: Contour surface conditioning tools, burnishing tools, handheld drum sanders, and other linear grinders and surface finishing machines with a 3/4" quad key shaft.

Are there other types of Abrasive Sanding Drums?

There most certainly are.  As surface finishing tools and linear grinding machines are gaining in popularity, more surface conditioning tool drums.  Currently, all of the available options are:
