What is a Non-Woven Abrasive?
Nonwoven abrasives come in a variety of options, but what sets them apart from other abrasive products like coated abrasives and bonded abrasives is the three-dimensional open weave of mesh/webbing used to form the products.
The webbed structure is most often made up of nylon or another synthetic fiber, which are embedded with abrasive grains. Rather than weave the fibers together, they are bonded using synthetic resins. This is how they get their “non-woven” abrasive name.
The webbing causes the abrasives to have a sponge-like structure that has more give allowing you to apply more or less force to change how aggressive the grinding action will be. The spring-like feature also allows you to use the product on an uneven/contoured surface with constant contact to the workpiece.
Non-woven abrasives (besides interleaf flap varieties) are not aggressive enough for heavy removal of material and better suited for paint/rust removal, deburring, surface prep, surface conditioning, and finishing applications.
